Leen Van Brantegem

Leen Van Brantegem graduated as a veterinarian from Ghent University in 1997. She worked as an assistant at the Universities of Ghent and Antwerp and obtained her PhD in veterinary pathology in 2007. After a period in the pharmaceutical industry and as a postdoctoral lecturer at the University of Antwerp, she returned in 2011 to the Department of Veterinary Pathology (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University).

In 2015, she became a European Specialist in Veterinary Pathology, and in 2020 she was awarded the title of Certified Forensic Veterinary Pathologist by the ECVP (ECVP-CFVP). She is a member of the European CFVP Steering Group, which promotes training and research in forensic veterinary pathology. She also completed specialized training programmes in the United States and the United Kingdom on forensic veterinary pathology and the link between animal abuse and domestic violence.

Within the Department of Veterinary Pathology, she manages the daily operations of the necropsy unit and is responsible for forensic post-mortem examinations. She is responsible for teaching master’s students in the clinical training programme in veterinary pathology and for the specialised pathology training of veterinary residents. Her research focuses on forensic veterinary pathology and the connection between animal abuse, neglect, and domestic violence. She regularly shares her expertise through lectures in Belgium and abroad.
