Colloquium on Gender-Based Violence in Mauritius

The colloquium brought together European experts from the EFJCA, France and Mauritian participants to share best practices as regards tackling this social ill, kicked-off, today, at the Ravenala Attitude in Balaclava, in the context of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women observed annually on 25 November.

Activism to End Violence against Women and Girls

An initiative of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare in collaboration with the European Union (EU), the colloquium is being held on 25, 28 and 29 November 2022. The 2022 theme was "UNITE! Activism to End Violence against Women and Girls".

Taiex program

The Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Koonjoo-Shah, the Head of the Development Cooperation of the European Union (EU), Mr Milko Van Gool, and the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator, Mrs Lisa Simrique Singh, delivered their remarks at the colloquium. The colloquium was possible because of the Taiex program of the EU.

EFJCA experts

Three experts of the EFJCA and one from France worked in depth with the participants in Mauritius from police, justice, NGO’s, ministry and policy on gender-based violence as a cross-cutting issue across different sectors. The experts and participants targeted the different dimensions of GBV, as well as multidisciplinary cooperation, good practices as part of project engineering and conversations with victims.

Different topics

Focus was laid on different topics: trauma informed care, non-fatal strangulation, child interviewing, free recall. In several interactive rounds the group focussed on building up multidisciplinary approach, needs on legislative level, awareness raising and framework for the next steps.

Family Support Services

On the 26 November 2022, the Family Support Services was launched, this morning, by the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, at the Abercrombie Police Station, in Port Louis in the context of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
