Roadmap for Women’s Rights ahead of International Women’s Day 2025
The European Commission is preparing a new Gender Equality Strategy 2026–2030, as part of the Political Guidelines 2024–2029. This updated strategy will build on past achievements and address emerging challenges.
As a first step, the Commission launched the Roadmap for Women’s Rights ahead of International Women’s Day 2025. It outlines eight guiding principles for a gender-equal society, including freedom from gender-based violence, equal economic opportunities, work-life balance, and political representation.
Focus
The new strategy will place particular focus on:
- combating gender-based violence,
- economic empowerment of women,
- equal political participation,
- tackling discrimination in health, education, housing, and social protection,
- addressing labour market challenges and online violence.
Key priority
A key priority will also be the implementation of newly adopted legislation, ensuring full benefit from recent successes through effective transposition and enforcement in Member States. The strategy will continue to apply a dual approach: targeted actions to promote gender equality and gender mainstreaming across all EU policies.
