The Veilige Huizen, the Agency for Justice and Law Enforcement and the European Family Justice Center Alliance (EFJCA) are pleased to invite you to a masterclass with Dr. Jackson Katz, an internationally recognised expert on genderbased violence, masculinities and prevention. How can men and boys take responsibility for helping to prevent genderbased violence?

And what kind of leadership does this require – personally, within organisations and in society? During this masterclass, Jackson Katz will combine insights from nearly four decades of practical experience with concrete strategies, video clips, reflection and exchange.

What will be covered?

Topics include:

  • challenging societal norms that condone or perpetuate abusive and violent behaviour;
  • engaging men and boys in the prevention of gender-based violence;
  • the bystander approach as a form of leadership and shared responsibility;
  • the principles of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) model;
  • the influence of media, representations of masculinity and the manosphere on boys and young men.

Katz uses current examples from entertainment and social media, together with clips from his award-winning educational productions, including the Tough Guise series on masculinities, media and violence.

Who should attend?

The masterclass is only accassible for professionals of the Veilige Huizen in Belgium and their partner organisations and the staff of the Agency for Justice and Law Enforcement.

About Jackson Katz

Jackson Katz, Ph.D. is an American educator, author and internationally recognised expert on gender equity and the prevention of gender-based violence.

In 1993, he co-founded Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP), a groundbreaking prevention programme that introduced the bystander approach to the prevention of sexual and domestic violence. The programme has been implemented in settings including education, sports and the US military.

Katz is the author of several books, including The Macho Paradox and Every Man: Why Violence Against Women Is a Men's Issue, and has created award-winning educational documentaries such as Tough Guise and The Man Card. He lectures and trains worldwide on masculinities, leadership and violence prevention.
